Countable and uncountable nouns
Overview
In this elementary-level ESL lesson plan, students will learn the grammar of countable and uncountable nouns with a particular focus on articles and modifiers. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns and use appropriate articles and modifiers for each type of noun.
The lesson begins with a suggested boardwork example that shows one way to present the target language of the lesson. This is followed by several low-resource ESL classroom activities where students will work on food vocabulary and a fun role-play task. To wrap up the session, we'll end with an engaging game to help reinforce the target language and provide students with a fun and interactive way to review what they have learned.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students review the grammar of countable and uncountable nouns with particular focus on articles and modifiers.
Start by adding the list of nouns with articles to the top right-hand side of the board and eliciting whether or not each is correct. If not, ask them to explain why and add that to the board. After that, step through the grammar of countable and uncountable nouns, asking for examples where you see the blue text.

Food categories
The students learn some new vocabulary related to food and drink.

Ordering food
For this speaking activity, the teacher prepares students for the restaurant role-play exercise that follows.

Role play: Out for a meal
In groups of three or four, students will come to the front of the room to act out a restaurant scene.

Classroom games
Stop the bus
Two teams of students race to think of different food types that begin with a randomly allocated letter.
