Discussing film
Overview
In the first lesson of our unit on film, students will engage in discussions about their tastes in movies and get into debates on various aspects of the industry. The lesson aims to expand their vocabulary related to cinema and enhance their speaking skills in expressing opinions, preferences, and critiques about different types of films and the broader industry.
The lesson plan starts with a suggested boardwork example, introducing new film-related vocabulary and phrases. Students will then participate in several low-resource classroom activities focused on collaborative speaking, encouraging students to discuss and debate various film-related topics. To end on a high note, we've planned a fun group game that consolidates the vocabulary and speaking skills practised during the session.

Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students help you to build a spider diagram on the board.
Start by eliciting or adding four film-related topics and adding them to the board. Then discuss concepts and vocabulary related to each one. Use this spider diagram as a guide:
Movie vocabulary: Positive, negative or neutral
Students work in pairs to identify a list of adjectives as being either positive, negative or neutral.
Pairwork movie talk
The students will work in pairs to discuss their taste in film.
Class debate: Movies
The students will debate some statements related to film and the movie industry.
Classroom games
Guess the flick
One student describes the plot of a movie while the others try to guess.
