Comparatives
Overview
Welcome to our introductory ESL lesson on comparatives. During this session, students will learn how to compare two individuals and become familiar with the most common comparative forms. By the conclusion of this lesson, they will have the necessary skills to confidently compare two people using the proper grammar structures.
The lesson plan incorporates boardwork as a visual aid to help students understand the target language. It also includes low-resource activities that encourage students to make comparisons between themselves, their peers, and different animals. The lesson culminates with a couple of enjoyable classroom games that effectively reinforce the concept of comparatives.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
Draw a couple of characters on the board and use them to introduce some common comparatives.
Start by drawing the images of Jake and Jenny and asking your students to describe them. Then tell the students that we are going to create sentences to compare them and add the comparative adjectives to the corner of the board along with their L1 translations. Finally, have the class help you to create some statements that compare Jake and Jenny. If the students find this part easy, only do the first three and have them work in pairs to make three more.

Classmate comparison
Students will write sentences comparing themselves to a partner.

Teacher vs animals
With help from your students, you'll compare yourself to different animals and add statements to the board.

Me vs animals
Students now get the chance to compare themselves to their favourite animals.

Classroom games
On the spot
Students have to correctly compare themselves to animals to win points.

Comparison chain
Students must work in pairs to create a series of comparative statements.
