Comparing ages
Overview
Welcome to our ESL lesson plan on comparing ages. In this session, your students will learn about the comparatives and superlatives used in English to compare individuals' ages. By the end of this lesson, they will have a comprehensive understanding of how to articulate age comparisons with confidence.
To start off this lesson plan, a boardwork suggestion is provided that highlights one way to present the target language. After that, students will take part in various low-resource classroom activities that encourage them to compare the ages of family members and draw comparisons between their ages and those of their classmates. Finally, the lesson concludes with an interactive classroom game that adds an element of fun while reinforcing the comparative grammar structures learned in the previous lesson.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students are introduced to the comparatives and superlatives that we use to compare ages.
Start by adding the comparative and superlative form of 'old' and 'young' to the top the board and create sentences that demonstrate the usage of each. You could do this as a group gap-fill exercise where the class shout out the adjective part of the sentence. After that, draw the characters on the board, adding the age information. Finally, add each of Dave's questions, confirm that the students understand it and elicit the correct response from David.

Compare your family
Students use the newly learned language to write about their family.

Youngest to oldest
Students must work together to form a line from youngest to oldest.

Character compare
For this writing activity, students have to answer age-related questions based on prompts on the board.

Classroom games
Animal comparison
Students have to correctly compare themselves to animals to win points.

Comparison chain
Students must work in pairs to create a series of comparative statements.
