Short forms of have got
Overview
This beginner ESL lesson aims to teach the contracted forms of have got. The lesson covers the grammar rules governing the use of these forms and provides various activities to help learners get to grips with them. By the end of the session, students will be able to easily use the contracted forms of have got in everyday conversations.
The lesson starts with a visual boardwork example to introduce the target language. Following that, students will engage in various low-resource ESL activities that emphasise the grammar and encourage collaborative speaking. As always, we will conclude with a fun classroom game that reinforces the lesson's main learning objectives.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students review the grammar rules and look at examples of the different short forms of have got.
Start by drilling the long forms of 'have got' before illustrating the correct contracted versions on the board. Next, elicit some examples of common possessions. Things that your students either have or haven't got. Finally, ask your students for some example statements and if possible, have them translate them into their L1.

Build a sentence
Using the board work, each student has to make a statement that uses the target grammar.

Short form practice
Students have to rewrite the sentences using the short form of 'have got' in the affirmative and negative.

My family
For this writing activity, students have to use the target language to create statements about their family.

What's in the bag?
Students will write about the contents of their schoolbag.

What's in his/her bag?
For this speaking activity, students reveal the contents of their partner's bag.
