Comparative adjectives
Overview
Welcome to our elementary-level lesson plan on comparative adjectives. Our focus is on reviewing the functional use and spelling rules of these adjectives. By the end of the session, students will be able to identify and use comparative adjectives correctly in spoken and written English.
We begin with a suggested boardwork example that shows one way to teach the target language of the lesson. This will be followed by several low-resource ESL classroom activities where the students will engage in collaborative writing activities. To wrap up the session, we have included a couple of classroom games that will help students consolidate their learning and have fun at the same time.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students review the functional use and spelling rules of comparative adjectives.
Start by adding the drawings of Steven and John to the top right-hand side of the board and asking for statements of comparison from the class. After that, review each of the spelling rules, eliciting as much as possible as you go.

Flip the expression
A writing activity where students create a few statements from the sample board work.

Can you compare...?
For this writing activity, students will work in pairs using the target grammar to create comparisons across a number of different subjects.

Superhero comparison
A group activity where students compare superheroes that the teacher has drawn on the board.

Classroom games
Snowball darts: Comparative adjectives
Students have to make comparisons to earn a throw of the snowball and a chance to win points for their team.

Dice: Comparatives and superlatives
Players have to make sentences using themes and adjectives that have been decided by the throw of the dice.
