Comparisons with as
Overview
In this ESL lesson plan, elementary-level students will review the grammar of comparisons of equality and inequality using as _ as and not as _ as. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to confidently use these structures in both written and oral communication.
The lesson contains a suggested boardwork example that shows one way to present the lesson's target language, along with several low-resource ESL classroom activities where the students will have the chance to practice comparisons of equality and inequality in various ways. As usual, we wrap up with a fun idea for a game that helps solidify the newly learned language concepts.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students review the grammar of comparisons of equality and inequality.
Start by adding a simple example to the board, try to use subjects that are familiar to the group and confirm that they understand the meaning clearly before moving on. After that, build out the grammar representation, eliciting examples of pronouns, adjectives and subjects from the class. When you have enough on the board, ask for an example of a logical sentence and add the first correct one to the board. Finally, explain how this construction changes when things are not equal and ask the students to convert the example on the board into a statement of inequality.

Grammar practice
The students create a few sentences using the target grammar for the lesson.

Extreme comparisons
A group writing activity where the students create exaggerated comparisons using 'as...as'.

The Z-Men
A pairwork activity where students compare the attributes of different superheroes.

Classroom games
Comparative dice
Players have to make sentences using a noun that has been decided by the throw of the dice.
