Past simple: Verbs
Overview
In this elementary-level lesson, students will focus on the past simple tense, learning how regular verbs adopt the "-ed" and also become familiar with the conjugation of some common irregular verbs. This lesson aims to provide students with the necessary skills to describe past events accurately, which is a fundamental aspect of English grammar.
The lesson plan includes a boardwork example to illustrate the correct formation of the past simple with regular verbs and introduces common irregular verbs. Following this, students will engage in a variety of grammar and writing tasks that will help to cement their understanding of past simple verb formation. The session will conclude with a classroom game that reinforces the day's learning in a fun and interactive way, ensuring that the concepts stick.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students will review how regular verbs change in the past simple and also look at some common irregular verbs.
Starting with the regular verbs, step through each of the spelling rules. Try to elicit multiple examples of each type using mime or the L1.

Past simple sentences
A writing task where the students make past simple statements from prompts on the board.

Routine
Students modify statements about routine from the present to the past.

Tell me about your day
For this writing activity, the students will write about their day so far.

Snowball darts
Students have to spell irregular past simple verbs to earn a throw of the snowball and a chance to win points for their team.
