Overview

In this third lesson on food for upper-intermediate ESL students, we'll focus on developing the conversation skills of reporting and reviewing. Students will practise effectively conveying their experiences and opinions about restaurant visits. The lesson aims to improve their ability to express positive and negative views clearly and constructively, a valuable communication skill in the real world.

The lesson plan begins with a suggested boardwork task, where the students work in groups to guess the meaning of various food-related idioms. They will then move on to low-resource classroom activities, discussing their best and worst restaurant experiences and participating in debates. To conclude the lesson, we've planned a fun classroom game to help reinforce what students have learned in this unit.

Classroom activities

Use of the board

The students have to prepare definitions of food-related idioms.

This can be used as a warmer or modified into a game to wrap up the lesson. Start by dividing the class into groups of three or four, add the idioms to the board and give them time to prepare a definition. If playing as a game, award a point for the closest description.
