Vocabulary and speaking
Overview
In this first upper-intermediate lesson in this unit, we'll dive into the rich world of travel and tourism. The lesson aims to broaden students' travel-related vocabulary and enhance their ability to express opinions and preferences about different aspects of travel, a valuable skill for real-world conversations and experiences.
The lesson plan includes a boardwork activity designed to warm up students and initiate a conversation about travel. This conversation will lead into a series of low-resource classroom activities, where students will engage in collaborative tasks and have the opportunity to share their opinions and preferences about various types of holidays. To wrap up the session, we've planned a fun group game based on a classic UK game show.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
Students review new vocabulary and concepts.
Let the students drive a discussion about travel and tourism. Start by eliciting or adding four travel-related concepts to the board. Then, discuss each and add any vocabulary that is appropriate to this level. The spider diagram below shows one way that your board could end up:

Holiday small talk
The students give their opinions and express preferences on different types of holidays.

Dream holiday
In pairs, students are going to interview each other about a holiday that they haven't yet been on, but would one day love to do.

Tourist at home
The students will consider their country as a tourist destination and talk about the reasons people would travel there.

Classroom games

An adapted version of a classic UK game show that can be played in the classroom.
