Tourism: Debate and discussion
Overview
In the third upper-intermediate lesson on travel, we turn our attention to the tourist industry. We'll explore various aspects of tourism, including its economic impact, cultural implications, and environmental considerations. Students will learn relevant vocabulary and expressions commonly used in discussions about the tourism sector. This knowledge will enable them to confidently engage in more complex conversations about the benefits and challenges of tourism in different parts of the world.
The lesson plan introduces the topic with a boardwork activity that reviews the homework assignment from the previous lesson in this unit. Students will then participate in several low-resource classroom activities, encouraging debate and discussion on various tourism-related topics. To wrap up, we've included a fun group game idea where students have to design a travel brochure.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
One at a time, students will discuss the reading assignment from the previous lesson.
The homework assignment was:
"The negative aspects of mass tourism."
You can use the following questions to help drive a discussion:
- What were the key points of the article?
- Which real-world examples did the author provide?
- Did they offer any solutions to the problems they discussed?
- Do you agree with the writer?
Build a spider diagram on the board to track new concepts and vocabulary. You might end up with something that looks like the following:

Tourism in our country
Students will now work in groups to prioritise the issues raised during the previous exercise.

Class debate: Travel and tourism
The students will debate some controversial statements related to travel and tourism.

Classroom games
Pictionary: Design a travel brochure
Players have to quickly draw a travel brochure on the board while their teammates guess which country it's for.
