Debate and discussion
Overview
In this third lesson on conspiracy theories, we'll focus on the recent surge in conspiracy theory culture. The students will explore and discuss the reasons behind this rise and its impact on society.
The lesson plan starts with a boardwork activity to review the previous lessons' homework and warm up for the day's discussion. This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of conspiracy theory culture, leading to a fun debate on the shape of the earth. To wrap up the session, we'll play a group game that reinforces some topics covered in this unit.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
As a warmer, review what the students learned from the homework task and have them discuss their opinions.
Start by adding the question to the top of the board and finding out how many students believe Bob Lazar's version of events. Add this to the corner of the board.
Next, divide the board into two halves and start to elicit the reasons why the students believe or don't believe Bob's claims. Debate each point as a group and document these on the board. Use the sample board to guide you.
In the end, find out if anyone has changed their mind and update the tally on the board.

A healthy conversation
For this pair work activity, the students will try to have a more in-depth conversation on the topic.

Don't quote me
The students will work in groups to discuss a couple of quotes from the notable American writer and professor, Isaac Asimov.

Flat earth debate
The students will solve the age-old mystery of the shape of the earth.
