Debate and discussion
Overview
The third lesson in this unit will focus on sparking discussions and debates about entertainment and its impact on our lives. Students will explore various facets of the topic, its role in culture and society and the intersection between entertainment and art. This lesson is designed to encourage expression, enabling students to discuss more complex ideas and share their perspectives.
We begin with a review of the homework from the previous session, which will serve as a springboard for generating boardwork and setting the stage for the day's discussion. This review will lead to collaborative speaking activities, where students will discuss the difference between art and entertainment. As usual, we've included a fun classroom game to end the lesson on a high note.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
The students report on their homework assignment from the previous lesson.
If you have done lesson 2 for this unit and gave out the homework, reviewing it in the classroom serves as a fantastic group activity to kick things off. Go one of the following ways:
- Invite the students to summarise their essays one at a time. Ask each a few questions, then open it out to the group for a discussion.
- Students first read a partner's work, before summarising it as part of a group discussion.
During the discussions, create a spidergram on the board to record new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. See the sample board for this lesson.

Group discussion
The class will discuss statements related to entertainment and leisure.

Debate
Students will prepare arguments and discuss the merits of hedonism.

Classroom games
ESL Pictionary: Entertainment
Players have to represent thematic vocabulary on the board while their teammates guess what they are.
