Inequality: (not) as _ as
Overview
In this intermediate-level lesson, we'll target expressions using (not) as _ as for making comparisons of equality and inequality. By the end of the session, students will be better positioned to make more nuanced comparisons, an important skill for clear and precise communication in English.
The lesson plan begins with a suggested boardwork example that presents one practical approach to teaching these comparison structures. Following that, students will work on a series of low-resource classroom activities, including grammar exercises, writing tasks, and speaking practice. To help wrap up the lesson in a memorable way, we've included a couple of ideas for classroom games, offering a fun way for students to review and practice the lesson's key concepts.
Classroom activities
Use of the board
Students review this common method for expressing comparisons of equality and inequality.
Add the first statement to the board and elicit its meaning from the group. After that, ask the group for more examples using this structure and add the best ones to the board. Now invite the students to modify this grammar structure to compare things that are unequal, and elicit more examples for the board. Finally, explain how 'so' can be used in place 'as' for negative constructions.

Glass half empty
Students have to modify statements to use '(not) as ... as' without changing their original meaning.

Equality vs inequality
A writing activity where students use the target language to describe what they see in the classroom.

Property ladder
A pairwork writing activity where students use the target grammar to compare two images of a house.

Class discussion
Students will work in groups of three or four to compare and contrast different related items.

Classroom games
Comparative dice
Players have to make sentences using themes and adjectives that have been decided by the throw of the dice.

Hot seat: Comparative and superlative
Students will have to describe sentences that contain the target language to the player in the hot seat.
